Chotu, that's my doggy. I love pets, and of all I love dogs.
I always wanted a pet. Once asked dad to get me a parrot and he told me, we did have one when I was very young. All I have is a faint memory of a parrot in a cage that hung from the ceiling. Mom says we gave him off coz of the fear of him being eaten by the neighbourhood cat. Mom doesn't like cats, so I never thought of having one. The obvious choice was of course, a dog. Fortunately dad agreed to buy me one, but only after we'd move into our new house. I liked the idea, our new home and a doggy too! We moved into our new home, 3 months passed by. Dad seemed to have forgotten about the dog! One day I overheard my brother’s friend mentioning about new born pups in his neighborhood. Should I wait any longer?? Nopes!!! One of those days on my way back home I decided to see the pups. Luckily the canine mother wasn't around. I decided to take a pup home. But how? I borrowed a basket from the neighbor, put this fella into it and left for home on my Luna Super, taking utmost care. He was so young and tender, and the road at some places, quite bumpy. Guess I was too caring, coz this sweetheart of mine had fallen fast asleep by the time I reached home! Mom saw the basket and was a li'l confused. But as soon as she peeped into it she grinned and asked me, "Had u been to the temple? Why didn't u get the coconut broken? (as is usually done by most people visiting the temple)". This left me puzzled, "Coconut?? Now that's expecting too much out of me mom. But..." peeping into the basket, I found him cuddled, face deep in, almost invisible, his body round, quite giving the shape of a coconut. And him being brown, mom wasn't to be blamed for mistaking him for a coconut! I pulled him out slowly n said "He's no coconut mommy". The smile from her face faded gradually, "What was the hurry?". Hurry!! I did wait for 6 months. "My room is big enough mommy. Moreover u should have someone with u when none of us is at home". She couldn't help but agree :-)
For the first 15 days he was kept inside the house coz the neighbor's dog, Ganesh, was a regular at our place. I had befriended him. He would come in with dad every evening. But after Chotu's arrival he never stepped into our gate.
Why call him Chotu? Bro and I couldn’t agree upon a common name. By then I had started calling the pup Chotu and he seemed to respond to it.
Well, he being the youngest at home, the name suits him.

I'd have to pick him on my way back home coz i cudn' have done that on my way to the college. Pets not allowed in my college u c. Another anecdote: Ganesh, my neighbor's doggy, wud follow me till the college if I'd go by walk. So I always had to find a fren to get a lift n loose him.
