Shopping Spree

I'd been out for shopping on Saturday evening with my roomie. It was a working day so we got delayed in the office. I bought a pair of sandals and some kitchen ware. It was 9pm by the time we were done with buying all the necessary and not so necessary stuff. We were looking for an auto rickshaw to get back home. The autowalas' usually ask for one and half times the fare a li’l past 9 though the legal time is past 10. We asked a couple of autowalas and they demanded one and half, as expected. We refused them and moved a li'l further to look for another one. An auto approached us. On enquiring even he demanded one and half times the fare. I said, "Why one and half now?" He replied, "Madam, 10 O'clock." I showed him my watch and told him it was only 9. He kinda got aggressive and complained that it was 10 already and yet I was reluctant to pay one and half. I was afraid he must be drunken coz of his behavior and started moving away. He made a statement, "If it's not yet 10 then I'll give you a free ride to your place. Let me show you the time in my mobile, it is 10 already." Then he pulled his cell phone out and checked the time and mumbled, "Only 9 is it?" And started off. I called back at him, "Bhaiya, what about the free ride that you'd promised?" But he didn't wait to listen. He was off with some other passengers.

Another of my experience with the local people here is, I being from Karnataka talk to them in Kannada. But 9 of 10 times I have been replied in Hindi or English. I don’t understand why?? If anyone addresses me first then they do it in Hindi usually.
I’m still wondering why??

Funnily thats what my experience always has been...
Seems they feel talking to the passengers in Hindi gives them a chance to exploit them better... level-playing turf, u see... Or with so many of the non-kannadigas in here, they are now unwilling to accept that Kannadigas also reside in here :)))
